16:00 - 18:00In illud: Apparuit gratia…: A Consideration of Arguments for Chrysostomic Authorship
TexteDans le cadre du séminaire “Jean Chrysostome : édition et histoire des textes”, le mercredi 19 mars 2025 de 16h à 18h, Margaret M. Mitchell (University of Chicago) donnera, en visioconférence, une communication intitulée:
In illud: apparuit gratia dei omnibus hominibus (CPG 4456): A Consideration of Arguments for Genuine Chrysostomic Authorship
Voici la présentation qu’elle en donne:
In my 2022 volume, John Chrysostom on Paul: Praises and Problem Passages, I provided an emended critical Greek text and first English translation of the homily In illud: apparuit gratia dei omnibus hominibus (Hom. Tit. 2:11-12 [CPG 4456]), which had first been published (Greek text and French translation) by Antoine Wenger in Revue des études byzantines in 1971 (“Une homélie inédite de Jean Chrysostome sur l’épiphanie”). On pp. 51-58 of my volume I considered the case for the authenticity of this homily which had been regarded as genuine by Wenger, but of doubtful authenticity by Wendy Mayer (The Homilies of St John Chrysostom: Provenance, Reshaping the Foundations, 2005, 26). I sought to invite further discussion of this question, and provided arguments on the basis of codicology, textual criticism, style and diction, form of argument, contents, and plausible historical setting, that the case for authenticity, while not absolutely certain, was sufficient for including this homily in my volume of sermons by Chrysostom on individual Pauline lemmata. Among other arguments, I sought to question Wenger’s assumption that this was a homily originally designed for the Feast of the Epiphany (with which he linked his case for authenticity). In laying out my assessment of the evidence, I made “a bid for other scholars to assess these new arguments … in ongoing research on Chrysostom’s homilies and the Pseudo-Chrysostomica” (JCPPPP, 58). To my knowledge, no one has yet taken up that invitation, and I would cherish the chance to carry forward this discussion and debate with you fellow Chrysostomiens in the Sources Chrétiennes Seminar next week.
